Greetings Saints!

Different things pass by my desk every day. I was just looking at some promotional material for Bible study materials. It was geared toward young adults, but the issues were not unique to that age group.

“My job is the most important thing in my life right now.”

“I’m trying to figure out what it means to be REAL.”

“I’m looking for a place where I can fit in and share my gifts.”

“How do I balance having a job and being involved?”

“I want to do something that I’m passionate about.”

“Where can I find people who are transparent and walking out their faith?”

Perhaps you thought such things in the past. Perhaps you may be thinking some of them right now. There things are not unique. As we celebrate Labor Day this weekend, it is a good time for us to reflect upon our labor for the Lord. Where is the Lord in my life? First place? Second place? Even further down the list? What does it mean to put the Lord first in my life? Does it only matter on Sunday morning? How does putting the Lord first look the rest of the week? How about Saturdays? All good things to ponder.

How marvelous, then, that our Lord put us and our salvation first on His agenda! How marvelous that He labored for us to give us the gospel! How truly unworthy I am of such attention, but how relieved I am that the Lord gave it to me anyway! Praise be to our marvelous Lord!

This Sunday we finish a short series on the last chapters of Hebrews. Next week, we will look at the entire book of Philemon. Then, we will begin a series on Timothy.

Now on to today’s devotion:

Consider this before questioning God

Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said: "Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? "Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'? -
Job 38:1-11

Have you ever been tempted to question God, to accuse God, to challenge God? Job did. Throughout the latter chapters of the book of Job, we hear challenging questions and statements made against God. In chapter 38, God responds.

God’s rhetorical questions put all things back into perspective. By his own wisdom and power he laid the foundations of the earth and set the borders for the seas. You and I were not around when God created the world. Dare we question and challenge his ways?

Certainly there are times when things don’t go very well for us. Challenging or blaming God, as if he did something wrong, is not the answer. Realizing that we live in a sin-filled world, surrounded by sinful people and betrayed by our own sinful nature is the place to start. Repentance followed by trusting in Jesus as our Savior from sin is the way to go. This path puts all things in to perspective.

Too often we get caught up in our own little world. We make this life comfy and cozy. We appease our wants and desires, even though they offer no spiritual benefit. Oftentimes these even distract us from hearing and following God’s will. Should we be surprised if God disciplines us, corrects us, trains us in the way we truly need to be going?

Instead of questioning and challenging God, let us thank God for his faithfulness in sending Jesus who has earned forgiveness of sins by his death for us. Remembering this truth puts all things in perspective. Amidst sickness, job loss, divorce, depression, we can unquestionably trust that God’s loving will for us is sure and certain in Jesus our Savior. Amen.

Prayer (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal - 414, verse 1):
I leave all things to God's direction;
He loves me both in wealth and woe.
His will is good, sure his affection;
His tender love is true, I know.
My fortress and my rock is he;
What pleases God, that pleases me.
